( 01 ) outer ring / open.

It's a sudden and jarring change. One moment there is the familiar momentum of a horse at full gallop beneath him, adrenaline making his blood pump fast through him, loud in his ears, the Titans bearing down on his group--there is panicked shouting from the soldiers behind him, and he rises up in the stirrups of his saddle--

And then, with the echo of a child's voice in the back of his mind, he is standing on his own two feet on a patch of barren soil facing gates nearly as large as those set into the walls. But these ones are crumbling, and the walls around them don't rise so high that they seem to touch the sky itself. It's enough to make his head spin, and for a moment he is struck dumb by the scenery whiplash. But Erwin has nothing if not a quick and adaptable mind, and his wits soon return to him. With them, of course, come an onslaught of questions he can't hope to answer for himself yet.

His hands stray instinctively to his hips, looking for the grips of the pair of blades that should be settled there, but find nothing. Though he wears the harness still, he is missing the reassuring weight of the maneuver gear itself: the sheathes by his sides, the propulsion system at his back. Gone, along with his horse, along with his men, along with everything familiar to him. He has never seen a landscape such as this one.

The only thing to do, then, is to look around and try to gauge what happened, where he is--the worn "Central City" sign doesn't do much to satisfy his curiosity.

Past the gates, the seemingly abandoned city turns labrythine. He wanders down several smaller streets only to be me with abrupt ends, empty alleyways seemingly purposeless and connected to nothing but what he assumes is a main street. He ends up retracing his steps several times over, and ultimately sticks to the larger roads instead. He's yet to see anyone else, nor has he found anything that would serve to answer any of his questions. His booted footsteps seem loud on the roadway beneath his feet, the only sound in an otherwise eerie silence.

Subaru had been aware of this presence for a little while, it being the closest one to him at present. He doesn't especially make directly for this person, instead trusting that should they get close enough, they will eventually meet.

Finally their paths cross, and Subaru stops, taking this stranger in with a long, measured look in silence. His features are distinctly European, all sharp angles and fair coloring. Even with his abilities dulled and muted, he can tell nothing especially spiritual about him, though just looking at him, there's an undeniable surety in his eyes, despite the situation.

Subaru's hands find their way into his pockets, long coat billowing slightly in the breeze that slips around them.

"Are you lost?"

Subaru glances out across the landscape, barren and crumbling.

"Lost implies that you are trying to go to a particular location."

His hands automatically go to curl around a pack of cigarettes and lighter - only to find them absent. The only thing he has with him, apparently, are the clothes on his back. Even the ofuda appear to be missing from his sleeves.

Mismatched eyes return to gaze in Erwin's direction.

"I'm afraid I can't say that is true for me, however I have never seen this place before."

She'd spent what felt like hours exploring a small portion of the city, but had come no closer to a conclusion regarding her predicament. It didn't feel like magic -- though, what did magic feel like anyway? -- but also was too empty to be some sort of after life. Perhaps this was some sort of Purgatory...

Morgana heard the stranger before she saw him; it was hard not to, considering everything else stood perfectly still. She quickened her pace excitedly at the idea of another human being, but slowed cautiously once she caught sight of him. His clothes that gave her pause. Never before had she seen anything like them.

Too late to turn away or hide, she stood dumbfounded in the middle of the street.
